Have you played it? I recently picked it up - I was not necessarily surprised it did not sell out so I was able to get a good price on it NEW by waiting a few weeks after release.

The good
Totally reborn game that incorporates the cool feel of Garou.
Zooming in and out of characters depending on fighting distance.
Fuckin awesome chara designs - especially Ikari team!!11!
Smooth and responsive action.
Sweet animation and reminder that 2D fighters can kick ass.
JOE HIGASHI'S Japanese VOICE ACTOR!

The bad
Iori's new (or lack of) moveset. (and lack of purple costume)
Few characters.
No Mai.
No VICE.
No boss.
No story.
No unlockable secrets.
No "face off" special animations Sad

The ugly
Clark "Still"
Pixellated outlines especially on Joe Higashi.

Overall after seeing the same game only "rehashed" for 15 years I am glad and EXCITED about this overhaul. It is well deserved of the wait, and a great platform for future games.

IIRC 98 was a leap in graphics and gameplay but it ended there.. Episode 12 really redefines it and is a great base for future games.

I have no regrets but wished there was more... KOF 12 is great as a game - but what makes KOF what it is is just not in this resurrection.

Yeah, played it in the arcades a couple times, but the scene died here within a matter of weeks. It was sad, really. :(

But wait, Mature is supposed to be a console only addition! @@;

Anyways, I think on one side they were too ambitious, and on the other they were too cautious. The ambitiousness, I think, was the least offensive of the two. They made an absolutely stunning game in terms of visuals, and that in turn did not give them time to work on a full cast, which stinks. Actually, I can accept this much though. I think the real nail in the coffin was the almost SF4-like impulsive desire to dumb-down (aka, simplify) the system.

In short, it sucks. :/

The gameplay is extremely bare bones overall, the regression to 94 movesets was lame, the new "dial-a-combo" thing is utterly stupid and overpowered, and... well, the whole thing just plays in an incredibly simple manner. In fact, I would go so far as to say it's WORSE than SF4, especially now that kof12 grapplers suck. T_T They took everything out of kof that made it kof, and that's why people still LINE UP for 2002 in arcades here (yes, the old one @@;) here, and play a bunch of 98UM and 02UM on the side.

I think that if they had tried to simply transfer the existing game to hi-def visuals and kept the complexity of the movesets and game systems (the auto-combo is ridiculous, but the attack cancel is kind of interesting and has some potential), fans would have taken to it much better. Even the low character count wouldn't have mattered, imo. They had some neat ideas, like the Chin retooling and Raiden, but things were just dumbed down too much and it was obvious that the game had become a capcom-esque "beta" release. Like you said, they didn't even have intro poses, or even a last boss! In my opinion, they should have retooled it to be a quasi-dm at the very least, and then fixed up all the loose ends before release. As is, it's quite obvious that it was a rush job. In the end, I was blown away by the visuals, but there's very little substance to grab on to. An interesting precursor of things to come, I hope, but little else. T_T

I am sad to hear that KOF12 did not have the lasting power I had hoped... as a 1 player game it really was not that exciting but I thought as a VS platform it would be appreciated..

Still you said it right.. that Critical-dial-a-combo-Variable-system-(from SF Alpha) seemed crazy and prone to abuse like the parry system from SF3. I saw it as a HP+HP+HP+special+SDM.

I am not sure if they were cautious or too ambitious but I really liked how they revamped the system.. considering that it took them.. what.. 4 years to make the game I think it came to a point where they had to cut their losses.. they were out of budget and had to release the game and leave the improvements to KOF13.

I guess I can't blame them.. I would prefer KOF12 over YET ANOTHER rehash of KOF11.

That being said I bought KOF98UM in the hopes of revisiting my youth of KOF95 rival team.. yeah that was great but on PS2 the game was just horrible.. Thanks to you I liked 2002, and I hope 2002UM is better as far as animation and smooth control.

I am just spoiled with my NEO GEO cart system Very Happy
I still like KOF11 as a game overall...

>become a capcom-esque "beta" release. Like you said,
>they didn't even have intro poses, or even a last boss!

Yeah see my thoughts above.. this really is a beta release but they couldnt afford to feed programmers for 8 years instead of 4.

I still miss Iori's CANNIBAL MASHER SDM.. Sad oh to see that again makes me relive my youth.

Yeah, it was definitely a time issue, maybe some paranoia over SF4 as well? I mean, they haven't had real competition for years, in a sense. I always thought that over-simplification of the fighting system was an overreaction to SF4 itself and its efforts to simplify and go back to one's roots. They were trying to make the system "accessable" again, but that's ridiculous imo. Good fighting games are, by nature, not easily accessable, and if Blazblue and its awesome sales have shown, people are more than willing to learn a complicated fighting game if it's good.

Iori is just sad. T_T The ambition is present, but he's such a horrible character in the revamp in terms of strength (or the lack thereof) and overall usefulness. I hope they're able to kick things into high gear in the next game. ^^

I heard the ps2 ports had some problems. I hope that didn't make them unplayable. @@; I haven't played 2002UM much, but it's a fantastic dream match from the looks of things. Massive cast, everybody and everything you could ask for. ALL the NESTS bosses, plus Rugal. It's just packed to the gills with great, classic stuff. :)
